As a woman in tech, this piece was a labor of love. Having served as an IT Director at rapidly growing nonprofit organizations for twelve years, I knew full well—on an experiential level as well as a statistical one—the challenges women in STEM face in pursuing their careers. Women of color face even greater obstacles still, facing a “double jeopardy” involving racial as well as gender stereotypes about their abilities. As STEM fields continue to expand and face a dearth of talent, the case could not be stronger for proportional female representation in technical professions. Here is a concise look at the current state of women in technology along with some suggestions on how we can do better.
