“OMG, spoilers!” Some people are really adamant about not encountering spoilers for their favorite TV show under any circumstances, and sci-fi / fantasy fans tend to be especially doctrinaire in that regard. So you can imagine how Game of Thrones fans responded when they learned that HBO had been hacked over the summer and GoT episodes and scripts were among the files stolen.
I’m not a GoT fan, though I may make watching it a winter project so I can catch up with the pop culture references that keep popping up in my social circle and on my timeline. As a longtime Star Trek fan, however, I can completely understand the mass freakout that took place when hackers threatened to spoil the penultimate season of GoT.
That’s why I thoroughly enjoyed writing this piece on the GoT hack. Not only was it fun to write, but it also illuminates just how deeply cybersecurity issues affect us—right on down to the cherished shows we enjoy while relaxing after a busy day at work.
